Clean soft, acid-sensitive limestone with neutral chemistry that avoids etching the delicate surface.
Limestone is a calcareous stone that acid-based cleaners will etch and permanently scar, a real risk given how tempting acids are on masonry. We use only neutral or specially formulated limestone-safe cleaners to lift the moss, algae, and grime that Northwest damp encourages. Low pressure and patient dwell time do the work so the soft surface is never gouged. The limestone comes back bright without the pitting that improper cleaning leaves behind.
Avoids the etching that acids cause on calcareous stone; Uses neutral, limestone-safe chemistry throughout; Lifts moss and grime with patience rather than force; Preserves the soft, delicate surface texture; Brightens the stone without pitting or scarring
1) Confirm the stone as limestone and test discreetly; 2) Apply a neutral limestone-safe cleaner; 3) Allow gentle dwell time to release growth; 4) Low-pressure rinse and inspect for evenness
Surface area of the limestone; Degree of moss and grime buildup; Softness and condition of the stone; Access and height of the feature; Extra care and testing time required
Dry summer weather is safest, because saturated limestone is even more delicate and slower to recover after cleaning.
